Step 1: Choose a program, then a university
Start with what you want to study, not the university name. Look at the courses you will take each year, how long the program lasts and where graduates work. Then compare universities that offer it: location, cost, accommodation and entry requirements.
In Freshman Hub you can go from school to program to course and see what you will study before you decide. CBU is available now; more universities are coming.
Step 2: Check the entry requirements
Most universities ask for a Grade 12 school certificate with a minimum number of credits, usually including English, plus specific subjects for your program (for example mathematics and sciences for engineering). Some programs also ask for extra tests, interviews or prior qualifications.
Requirements differ by university and program and can change each year. Always confirm them on the university's official website or application notice.
Step 3: Gather your documents
Typical documents are your Grade 12 certificate or results slip, national registration card (NRC) or passport, passport-size photos, and an application fee receipt if one is required. Make clear copies and keep originals safe.
Our first-year checklist lists what to prepare and when.
Step 4: Apply before the closing date
Use the university's official application process and submit before the closing date. Closing dates are strict. Keep your application reference and any receipts.
Be careful with anyone who asks for money outside the university's official channels.
Step 5: Plan your funding
Think about tuition, accommodation, food, transport and learning materials. Options students look at include family support, employer sponsorship, bursaries and government loans or scholarships (for example through the Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board, HELSB). Check the official eligibility rules and deadlines for each.
Step 6: After you get an offer
Accept your place by the stated date, pay what is required or show sponsorship, then follow the registration and orientation steps. Sort out accommodation early, because on-campus space is limited.
Track your key dates in the Important Dates feature, and use reminders so nothing slips by.
Information here is general guidance and can change. Always confirm requirements, fees and dates with your university's official notices.
